Gilly the Axolotl
by: Lelia

The axolotl is a type of salamander that never fully undergoes metamorphosis and remains in its larval form throughout its life. Axolotls are known for their unique color patterns, which can range from white to pink or yellow. One of the most unique features of the axolotl is its incredible regenerative abilities. They can regrow lost limbs, spinal cord tissue and even parts of their brain, making them a subject of intense scientific research. Unfortunately, pollution, human consumption and the introduction of non-native fish species into its habitat have gravely diminished the wild population. Today there are estimated to be between 700 and 1,200 axolotls in the wild.
