Mara the Peacock Spider
by: Ahooka

This dazzling good-looking fellow is incredibly tiny, the size of a grain of rice. To court females, the male peacock spider raises his abdomen and third pair of legs for display. They have been compared to peacocks in this respect. When approaching a female, the male will vibrate his colorful abdomen and dance from side to side. Female spiders have been recorded eating males if their dance moves are unimpressive. He must therefore mesmerize or die. Arachnid populations are plummeting worldwide. Some peacock spider species are critically endangered. The primary threat is habitat destruction through bushfire.
