Zilia the Mangrove Hummingbird
by: Thelulubal

This is the only hummingbird species that is adapted to life in mangrove forests. One of their most distinctive features is their long, curved bill, which is perfect for feeding on the nectar of flowers that grow in the mangrove swamps. These hummingbirds construct their nests on the hanging roots of mangrove trees. This unique nesting behavior helps the birds to avoid predation by snakes that cannot easily climb the slippery roots. About 1,500 - 7,000 mature individuals remain in the wild. Mangrove forests are cleared for development and agriculture. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these important ecosystems and the unique species that depend on them.
