Zuma the Sloth
by: Irene Strange

Zuma is a Pygmy Three-Toed Sloth, one of the world\'s most endangered mammals. A 2012 census estimated the total population at 79. They have a unique, slow-moving lifestyle and spend most of their time in the canopy of mangrove trees, where they feed on leaves, shoots and fruits. The large, curved claws help the sloth to keep a strong grip on tree branches. They host algae inside their fur which causes their fur to have a greenish hue, serving as an efficient camouflage. Threats to the sloth\'s survival include timber harvesting and human settlement, both of which lead to habitat degradation.
