Yellow-crested cockatoos are known for their distinctive bright yellow crest, which they raise when excited or threatened. These adorable birds are curious, playful, gentle – and noisy! Deforestation, hunting for the pet trade, and poaching for their beautiful feathers have caused a significant decline in their population. With only 1,200-2,000 individuals remaining, they are now considered critically endangered. Although the trade of yellow-crested cockatoos is subject to strict regulation and is only authorized in exceptional circumstances, illegal hunting continues to this day.
