A crocheter mentioned the starting point of the back legs is a bit confusing, hence a change is made in the 5th print run of the book. I'm sharing this change with you:

Turn your dog with the back leg openings up, close to you, and the head facing down.

Left hind leg (start in beige yarn)
Make the left hind leg by crocheting around the right leg opening. Pull up a loop in the first white stitch of Piece B of the belly (point A).
Rnd 1: sc in all 26 st around the leg opening [26]

Right hind leg (start in beige yarn)
Make the right hind leg by crocheting around the left leg opening. Pull up a loop in the first of the 13 beige stitches, next to the white belly.
Rnd 1: sc in all 26 st around the leg opening [26]
