I am a bit sad as my whale doesn't work. I am doing the transitions as described, I am using x single crochets, but anyway the line is sloping strongly. What can I do? Please help.

If you yarn under instead of over the line doesn't shift as much. Yan describes that method in the book.
I have found that if you twist it the opposite way that it is swirling as you're stuffing you can line the stiches back up. You have to have a little give in your yarn which you will probably have from the colour changes. Then twist and stuff as you go.
