Chip the caterpillar amigurumi pattern

Chip the Caterpillar amigurumi pattern by @hookabee

This little guy is quick to make, but also fun and interesting. The pattern includes bobble stitches (for his little legs!), working in both loops and in back loop only, and has multiple colour changes. You can make him in joined rounds for cleaner colour changes (links to tutorials in pattern), or stick with continuous rounds.

He is great for using up yarn in your stash because different brands of yarn with different fibres can be used to make him – this would actually add fun texture and variety to his body!

He measures only 5.5 inches long when crocheted with worsted weight yarn.

This free pattern includes detailed instructions and step-by-step photos, plus you can contact me along the way to ask any questions.

It is an intermediate level pattern that involves starting with a magic ring, joined rounds (if you want!), colour changes, single crochet, increasing, decreasing, attaching pieces, and working through both loops and back loop only.

Materials you will need:

  • E US (3.5 mm) hook
  • worsted weight yarn in three different colours (approximately 9.3 yds (8.5 m) for the face colour, 18.5 yds (17 m) for the antennae and feet colour, and 6.2 yds (5.7 m) for the last colour)
  • yarn/tapestry needle
  • removable stitch markers
  • two 9 mm plastic safety eyes
  • polyester fiberfill stuffing

Note: If you are making this amigurumi for someone under 3 yrs, I recommend crocheting or embroidering the eyes instead of using the plastic safety eyes.
